Opening start menu with the Windows key in Xubuntu

My distribution of choice for all my non-server machines is Xubuntu, due to its stripped down and low resource usage desktop environment. One thing that has irked me for ages is that the Windows key doesn’t open the start menu (or the whisker menu as it’s known in Xfce), unlike standard Ubuntu.

Fortunately, this behaviour is easy to enable:

  1. Open the Keyboard application (Start menu -> Keyboard).
  2. Switch to the Application Shortcuts tab.
  3. Click the Add button (Edit only allows you to change the command, not the shortcut).
  4. Enter xfce4-popup-whiskermenu as the command.
  5. When prompted, press the Windows key – it will usually show up as Super L.
